Description

  • Sir James Thornhill
  • Door panels depicting Neptune and Amphitrite, with the arms of the Worshipful Company of Drapers and the City of London painted on the reverse
  • a pair, both oil on panel

Condition

PAINT SURFACE Both works would appear to be in generally very good, stable condition. There is some light surface abrasion to the verso of the former picture. There are a few discoloured retouchings on each panel. These are visible under a strong light. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings throughout both panels. Much of this is cosmetic. There is evidence of minor infilling to old lines of craquelure. FRAME Neither work is framed.

Catalogue Note

The Worshipful Company of Drapers is one of the leading Livery Companies of the City of London. It ranks third in the order of precedence of Livery Companies, thus making it one of the "Great Twelve", along with the Grocers and Goldsmiths.

Most likely to have been used originally as carriage ornaments, these panels may well have formed part of the decoration for the company's retinue during the Lord Mayor's Parade.
