Catalogue Note
Francis of Paola (1416-1507) was a Franciscan friar who led an eremitic life near Paola in Calabria. He and his followers later formed the Order of Minim Friars (deriving from the word minimi, meaning 'the least' in God's household). Well known for his healing powers, he was later summoned to France by Pope Sixtus IV in order to tend to the dying King Louis XI. In the present work he is seen carrying his traditional banner with the inscription "CHARITAS".
