Condition

Lined canvas. The surface is very taut and thin. Under UV light: very small retouches on the two figures at left and right.

Catalogue Note

The present work would appear to be a modello for the altarpiece by Sagrestani in the Complesso di San Firenze, Florence. A bozzetto sold Sotheby's, London, April 5, 1995, lot 218. An even smaller oil sketch, in which the figure of Christ is omitted but the figures of the Virgin and Saint John appear, was exhibited in London, Hazlitt Gallery, 1963, and in London, Royal Academy, 1979.
