Catalogue Note

The sitter of this portrait has traditionally been identified as the Hon. Mrs. Stanhope. She was born Elizabeth Falconer (or Faulkner) and was married, in circa 1783, to Henry Fitzroy Stanhope, the second son of William, 2nd Earl of Harrington. Her portrait was painted twice by Sir Joshua Reynolds, in 1782 and 1786.
