Catalogue Note

This portrait is a modern copy of the painting by Raeburn in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (Mackie number 726) of c 1805-8.  The original portrait shows a characteristic combination of Romantic elements in the landscape, lighting and palette, together with Neo-Classical features in the linear design of the composition.  Raeburn was a highly expressive portraitist and in the original composition at Edinburgh he hints at the sitter's capacity for the most delicate and fashionable Romantic sensibility.  She was Zepherina Loughnan who, in 1796, married Lt.-Col. Henry Veitch of Eliock (d. 1838).
