Canvas is lined. SURFACE: sitter is well-painted, although pigment layer has been flattened and details are not crisp; both lights and darks have sunk-in; surface is dirty--might benefit from a cleaning UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: hard to see through old varnish; there is inpainting along edges and a few dots on his face and collar
