Catalogue Note

a fine copy. This is the second edition (the first, of volumes one and two, had appeared in 1723) of La Mottraye's description of his travels over a long period throughout Europe, Tartary and the Levant, and in particular of the Ottoman Empire. The third volume, entitled The Voyages and Travels of A. De La Motraye, vol.III. in... Prussia Russia and Poland &c. is in fact a separate work from the first two volumes.

La Mottraye, a French Huguenot, lived in England for many years and on his return from his travels received a pension from George I. A number of the plates are by William Hogarth.
