Catalogue Note

The residence referred to in the title was not Lewis's, although following the publication of Illustrations of Constantinople he did later travel extensively in the East, but John Richard Coke Smyth's. Coke Smyth made his sketches during a two year stint in Constantinople as an unpaid attaché. He later accompanied the Earl of Durham to Canada in 1838 as drawing master to the Earl's daughters and some of his work during this visit was published by McLean as Sketches in the Canadas.
