first edition, 3 volumes (including atlas), 4to (305 x 236mm.) and folio (560 x 425mm.), text: 2 engraved portraits, one plate and 26 illustrations, atlas: 44 engraved plates, maps and plans, 7 double-page or folding, text bound in contemporary calf, atlas modern half leather, text: some leaves browned or spotted, bindings rubbed, expertly rebacked with gilt ship decoration, atlas: folding map with small hole (?paper flaw) and with a few words of caption slightly cropped at head, some spotting and damp-staining, one plate (Great Wall) with long manuscript annotation (also affected by damp)
