Catalogue Note

the sussex-crawford copy of this rare and attractively printed edition of the greek liturgy.

The Anthologion, an abridgement of the liturgical books of the Eastern Orthodox Church, was compiled in the latter part of the sixteenth century for use by itinerant priests as a portable alternative to the full liturgy. The present series of works, which includes a Psalterion, prayers of intercession, various offices and a Menaion, was compiled by the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and is longer than its predecessor. Clearly arranged, it makes extensive and effective use of printing in red. Although bound in a different order, the contents of the Sussex-Crawford Anthologion appear to tally with those of that in All Souls' library, bound in six volumes.
