first edition, large paper copy, 2 volumes, folio (475 x 334mm.), half-titles, engraved additional pictorial title in volume 1, 3 maps hand-coloured in outline, and 143 plates and plans (13 hand-coloured, 4 sepia), one folding table, plate list at end of volume 2, original boards, uncut, some spotting, half-title vol.1 and plate 81 repaired not affecting printed area (no loss), bindings slightly worn and with some repairs, upper cover of vol.1 recovered or replaced and with new endpapers

Included in the lot is a collection of manuscript material relating to the publication of this work, comprising: the text of a deposition by the publisher Boudeville, setting out his complaints about Langlès (whose delays cost him several lost subscriptions) and demanding 12,000 francs in damages, 20 pages, folio, c.1817; two autograph letters signed by Langlès to Boudeville, complaining of the artists' delay and that he has not been sent the necessary material, 5 pages, 4to and 8vo, 19 February 1813 and 26 August (no year); an autograph note by the cartographer Jean Denis Barbié du Bocage, acknowledging receipt of payment for a political map of India, 1 page, 4to, stamped, 7 July 1818; a letter written on behalf of M. Roux, asking the recipient to provide three copies of the book for the Princes of Spain, 2 pages, 8vo, Paris, 2 October 1811; an autograph letter signed by Charles, Comte de Rechberg, introducing the bearer, the artist Argenti, 2 pages, 4to, Munich, 18 February 1819; and an autograph draft by Pierre Réné Auguis of the prospectus for the book, 2 pages, 8vo
