Catalogue Note

a fine copy of this uncommon map of the philippines.

Published in Historia de la provincial de Philipinas de la Compania de Jesus (Manilla, 1749) this is "one of the most notable works to have been published in the Philippines" (Retana).

The map, printed on rice paper, is a reduced version of Murillo's famous map of the Philippines originally published in 1734,  "the most accurate and largest ever drawn of the Archipelago... a model copied by other cartogaphers for the remainder of the eighteenth century" (Quirino). It was engraved by Nicolás Bagay, a Tagalog, and an outstanding engraver of his generation.
