Catalogue Note

Influential map of Japan drawn by Reland from a Japanese model. As a consequence, he was the first to use Sino-Japanese characters in a European printed map, in the naming of the sixty-six provinces. While some of the cartography was regressive, Reland's delineation removed a lot of western errors. This state of the map is derived from that prototype, but omits any credit for the source.
