Catalogue Note

Rare edition of the Real Cédula, of 4th September 1796 which implemented the Peace Treaty of 27 October 1795. This is a copy which was addressed to the Viceroy and Captain General of Navarra and any other judges or officials who might have had to implement the Real Cédula or be affected by it. It contains additional material relating to the publication and distribution of the Cédula and the Treaty.

The United States were represented by Thomas Pinckney and various clauses define boundaries of Florida and mark the Mississippi as the boundary between Spanish Louisiana and the settlements of the United States. Most importantly it secured common navigation of the river for the Spanish and Americans.
