Catalogue Note

This Ptolemaic world map was just one of a variety of maps published in Margarita philosophica, the first modern encyclopaedia to appear in print, and published in various editions from 1503. Rather crudely drawn, this map shows no hint of the discovery of the Americas displayed in the contemporary maps by Giovanni Contarini  and Johannes Ruysch (1506 and 1508). There is a note on the map indicating the southern extension of Africa.
