Catalogue Note
Famous map of the world, believed to have been compiled by Münster, but more famous for the elaborate pictorial surround, credited to the artist and woodblock cutter Hans Holbein the Younger, with the two cherubs at the poles rotating the world on its axis. The map was published in the Basle editions of Johann Huttich's Novus orbis regionum ac insularum veteribus incognitarum, edited by Simon Grynaeus, with minor variations in the type inserts, this example with the large letters for 'ASIA' (Harrisse's A state).
