Catalogue Note

rare. Dr Salih Subhi, an Egyptian public health official, was commissioned by his government to undertake the Hajj in 1888 and 1894. Here he describes the eight-month journey in great detail. In his opening remarks, he compares his work to European offerings: ''Tous les ouvrages publies en Europe que l'on possede sur ce sujet si interessant, malgre quelques qualites reelles, sont plus ou moins fantastites, d'une autorite douteuse et souvent parsemes d'erreurs.'' Some of the plates in the work are after Sadiq Bey (1832-1902), the celebrated photographer of Makkah and Al Madinah.

The photographs comprise 4 of Makkah, 3 of Al Madinah and Jeddah, 2 of the Mahmal, one of the Kiswah, Mount Arafat and Muna and 4 portraits, of Abbas II of Egypt, the Sharif of Makkah, the Sheikh of the mosque at Al Madinah and the author.
