Catalogue Note

very rare. Sadiq Bey (1832-1902) was a important pioneer in the history of Arabian photography and exploration. This was his fourth and final book on the Hijaz, which contains a wealth of information for pilgrims and is illustrated with his photographs taken in 1880-1881. In the text Sadiq Bey proudly states that he was the first photographer of Makkah and Madinah "and for this" he says, "I was awarded a gold medal of the first class at the Venice exhibition in 1881".
