first edition, 2 atlas volumes only (without text volume), folio (645 x 475mm.), half-titles, titles, plate list in each volume, 159 lithographed or engraved plates, plans and maps (62 + 97), many printed in colours, one double-page, contemporary red morocco-backed cloth boards, spines in compartments with raised bands gilt, upper covers lettered and stamped in gilt with the crest and monogram of riccardo de' sangro, duc de' sangro and duca di martina, some spotting to plates, spines somewhat worn with loss

Provenance

Don Riccardo de' Sangro, Duca de' Sangro, Duca di Martina (1889-1978), descendant of the Emperor Charles V and aide-de-camp to Umberto II, King of Italy; crest and monogram on upper covers.
The de' Sangro family is one of the oldest and most important noble Neapolitan families, whose history can be traced back to 1093.

Catalogue Note

rare. "[a] work of major importance [in which] prisse recorded a tremendous series of illustrations of egyptian monuments. he was comparable to champollion in his output of work, but his drawings were very different" (Blackmer).

The plates were published in 42 livraisons from 1868 to 1878. However the titles in this copy, as with the Blackmer copy, bear the dates 1878. A text volume was published in 1879.
