Description

  • Four autograph love letters signed ("tutto tuo Giacomo", "Giacomuckilissimo" and "Muckilini"), to the singer Rose Ader
declaring his love for her and his unhappiness without her, recalling their unforgettable kisses at the Mediterranée Hotel in Viareggio, sympathizing with her desire to be back with him once again, chiding her for her impatience, assuring her that he would be with her all the time were he free, as he is bored at home where no-one understands anything about him, but admits he does not have the courage to come and stay with her in Florence and that he cannot abandon his work on his opera Turandot; Puccini discusses Rose's trip to Tunis and asks about the singers and why she is not singing Mimì in La bohème, and arranging her visits to be with him in Viareggio,

12 pages, 4to and 8vo, printed stationery (Regina-Palast-Hotel, Munich and with Puccini's Viareggio address), 3 autograph envelopes, postmarked, Munich 23 August 1921-Viareggio, 13 & 14 April 1922

Catalogue Note

...mio dolce Tesoro penso sempre "immer" tanto a te, mia unica grande gioja!

These love letters record Puccini's secret trysts with the German soprano Rose Ader (1890-1955) in Viareggio--it was assumed (by Budden and others) that his infatuation with her was wholly platonic. Rose was a light soprano, whom Puccini fell in love with when he met her at the  Hamburg premiere of Il trittico in February 1921, where she sang the role of Angelica.  Puccini's letters to Rose are almost entirely unpublished, these four being addressed to her in Hamburg and Palermo.
