Catalogue Note
This is an intriguing collection of eighteenth-century parts for church works by the Italian composer David Perez (1711-1778).
Whether any of these sets of parts were used by the Academy of Ancient Music or by the Concerts of Ancient Music, the latter society founded in 1776, is a question that can be raised, but not resolved here. Surviving programmes of the Academy record many performances of Perez's church music between 1768 and 1775 (including one of a 'Mass in F' on 26 November and 3 December 1772), and three scores from the library of the Concerts of Ancient Music, now in the Royal College of Music, London, are for works in this collection (MS 472: a score of the Kyrie and Gloria listed above as [3]; MS 979: a score of of the Kyrie and Gloria listed above as [4]; and MS 978: a score of the 'Quoniam' and 'Cum sancto spiritu' from the same 'Gloria' as in [4]), although none of the hands in these scores can be found in the present parts. A score of [1], written by the principal copyist of the present parts for [1], and whose title-page is written by the other hand found in [1], is preserved in the Royal Music Library in the British Library (R.M.21.g.22).
