Description

  • Autograph letter signed ("RichardWagner")
[to Franz Lachner in Munich ("Hochverehrter Herr und Freund")], apologizing for not taking up his introduction to Herr von Frays, the Intendant at Munich, where Lachner was conductor, explaining why he has changed his mind about staging one of his early operas [Rienzi] at Munich, since it will give him the chance to arrange for all his youthful works to be given at different opera houses, hoping that Lachner will be content to have been a great help in advancing this project, and apologizing for his earlier "scarcely comprehensible behaviour" in Zurich

Catalogue Note

Wagner had always detested and despised Franz Lachner (1803-1890), a prominent if old-fashioned composer and a fine Kapellmeister at the Hofoper in Munich.  Wagner had given Lachner the cold shoulder at a music festival in Zurich in August 1858 (whilst in the midst of the debacle with the Wesendoncks), but had written him a fawning letter in September, asking if he would consider staging his early opera Rienzi in Munich, which Lachner had all-too enthusiastically followed up. Meanwhile, Wagner was in Venice composing the second act of Tristan und Isolde. See E. Newman, 'Wagner and Franz Lachner', in The Musical Times (1913).
