  • The composer's own copy of the Symphony No.5 in D major, first edition, with extensive autograph musical corrections and additions
116 pages, large 8vo (25.4 x 17.8cm), inscribed by the composer on the upper cover ("Corrected Copy"), the additions, including added dynamic markings, made in ink and affecting chiefly the wind instruments, one 10-bar revision notated on a strip of manuscript paper and affixed to the score with translucent adhesive tape, original printed wrappers, Oxford: O.U.P., 1946, staining to wrappers, small tear to upper right-hand corner of first leaf

Catalogue Note

Written between 1938 and 1943, Vaughan Williams's Fifth Symphony was first performed on June 24, 1943 at a Proms Concert in the Royal Albert Hall, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer. The important corrections added to the present copy were incorporated in later published editions.
