Catalogue Note

The arrangement by Stravinsky and Sol Babitz, is apparently unpublished.

The Suite No.2 for small orchestra derives from the Five Easy Pieces for piano duet (1916-1917), and was orchestrated by Stravinsky in 1921. Here Stravinsky worked along-side Babitz, both writing in pencil, with the composer's interventions indicated with small orange crosses in the margins.

Sol Babitz (1911-1982) was a violinist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, who often advised Stravinsky on writing for the violin and also wrote program notes for Stravinsky premieres, including for the Danses Concertantes" (see lot 143, no.7).  He was a pioneer in promoting historical authenticity in violin playing and published a scholarly edition of J.S. Bach's Solo Violin Partitas.  Robert Craft notes that Sol Babitz was one of the first friends that Stravinsky introduced him to in 1948.
