Catalogue Note

Arthur Lutze (1813-1870) was a homeopathic doctor. In 1841, he was on a journey near the river Elbe where his progress was halted because of flooding at Torgau; he was diverted to Halle and thence to Leipzig, where he met and was warmly received by Mendelssohn. This canon, given to him by the composer, was published by Lutze in his autobiography (1866), where the whole event is described. A solution is contained in The Mendelssohns on Honeymoon, ed. by P. Ward Jones, Oxford 1997, p. 205. We are grateful for the assistance of Dr Ralf Wehner in our cataloging of this item.
