- Fine autograph letter signed ("J.B."), about the second piano concerto, to his publisher, Simrock
instructing him not to send the score of the concerto to be bound, informing him that he has been invited to give numerous performances of the work, discussing the problem of the instrumental parts and the need of the orchestral societies to buy their own and enquiring how other composers surmount this problem

Catalogue Note
Brahms's Second Piano Concerto was completed in 1881 and given its premiere in Budapest in November of that year, with the composer as soloist. The work was published by Simrock in 1882. This letter is published, with a few minor differences, in Johannes Brahms: Briefwechsel, ed. M. Kalbeck (Berlin, 1917), pp.219-220.
