Catalogue Note
This is a remarkable autograph transcript of part of La Damnation de Faust, written at an early stage of its composition; he began the work during his tour of Eastern Europe in the winter of 1845 but did not complete it until October 1846. There are apparently no surviving early sketches for this movement and the text here diverges somewhat from the final version. Berlioz's description "Drame en concert" accords with his original inscription "Opéra de Concert" in the autograph score. Envisioned here as a work in three acts, the final version is in fact in four parts.
