Catalogue Note
The first edition of the vocal score of Tristan, prepared by Hans von Bülow, was published at the end of 1860. While Mathilde Wesendonk is usually considered to have been Wagner's muse while writing Tristan, Wagner's inscription on the title-page might seem to suggest that the dazzling intellect and beauty of the poet and journalist Judith Mendes (née Gautier, 1845-1917) also played its part.
