first edition, 364 pages, 4to, Ricordi's blind stamp for January 1887, the composer's inscription on the verso of the half title, plate number 51023, publisher's gilt-lettered maroon cloth wrappers, 5 February, 1887, fading to spine

Catalogue Note

rare. Not recorded by Hopkinson, whose first complete edition (63A) includes the date of the work's first performance (5 February 1887) on the title - not present here. That the present copy predates the premiere is further suggested by the fact that Verdi's inscription is dated the day of the first performance.

The dedication is to Giuseppe Spatz, the owner of a hotel in Milan where the composer often stayed and where on 27 January 1901 he would die.
