Description

  • Lock of Beethoven's hair, framed and glazed
with a two-page autograph note of authentication, signed, by Ludwig Carl Seydler, to whom Anselm Hüttenbrenner gave the lock, having taken it from Beethoven on his deathbed ("Diese Haare Beethovens hat dem grossen Meister sein Schüler, Anselm Hüttenbrenner am Todesbett abgeschnitten und dann an seine Freunde verteilt, darunter an meinen Vater L. Karl Seydler. Anton Seydler [paraph]"), and a note of authentication by Seydler's son, Anton, on the back of the frame, apparently some follicles present



overall size c.25 x 20cm, C. L. Seydler's note of authentication, dated 5 May 1881, attached to the lock by a green thread and contained behind the frame's removable back, stamp of Anton Seydler to back of frame

The item comes in a hinged buckram box, also containing a one-page documentation of ownership and provenance, together with three photocopied pages from an article concerning the lock of hair - Konrad Stekl, 'Zur Dokumentation der Grazer Beethoven= und Schubert=Locken', Blätter für Heimatkunde (Graz, 1967) - and one photocopied page of biographical information concerning the Seydlers.

Anselm Hüttenbrenner (1794-1868) was a pupil of Beethoven's and witnessed the death of the composer on 26 March 1827.
