Catalogue Note

The "Grosse Fuge" is one of Beethoven's most remarkable creations: a unique combination of dramatic contrasts, variation and counterpoint. Over 700 bars long, it transcended its original role as the final movement of the Quartet op.130, and his publisher therefore persuaded Beethoven to issue it as an independent  work.
