Catalogue Note
Simplicius was one of Strauss' major operettas from the 1880s, based on the seventeenth-century novel sent in the Thirty Years' War by Grimmelhausen. The work was first performed at the Theater an der Wien on 17 December 1887, with the role of Armin taken by Karl Streitmann (1858-1937).
The music is the refrain from Armin's Entrée "In ganzem Land hat sich entbrannt" in Act 2, of Simplicius (p.65 of the contemporary vocal score by Cranz of Vienna). Arnim is in love with Hildegarde (a General's daughter), and drops his studies at university in order to enlist in the army and win her hand.
