Catalogue Note

This manuscript is apparently unknown to scholars of Spohr's music. No other autograph manuscript of this song is recorded (see Folker Göthel, Thematisch-bibliographisches Verzeichnis der Werke von Louis Spohr, Tutzing, 1981, p. 471). The song was published by Müller of Karlsruhe in 1842.

This is a fine and attractive song in the style of Schumann, cast in the traditional "Bar" -form. The accompaniment follows the vocal line closely, but the part-writing is remarkably chromatic, reflecting the mature style of the composer and producing Tristanesque chord-formations at climactic points.
