Catalogue Note

From the mid-1980's Khanna's art becomes more private and reflective with references to memories from his childhood. Miss Amery was his mother's English teacher and is a subject he has returned to on a number of occasions (a canvas of Miss Amery is illustrated in Gayatri Sinha, Krishen Khanna: A Critical Biography, New Delhi, 2001, p. 158). Reveling in the ordinary, the artist states, 'The use of narrative and form is a dialogue with myself... choosing a very common, banal subject allows me scope for leela.' (ibid, p. 155). Geeta Kapur observes that 'his art has a neighbourly observation; it is humanist, tender and vulnbrable, like the man, but not political. The binding factor in his work is his humanism' (ibid ).
