Catalogue Note

In the works of Ranjit Hoskote, 'Badri's pictorial vocabulary includes elements of the Medieval woodcut, Byzantine portraiture, the Ajanta mural, German Expressionism and Pahari miniatures, among other sources. Working as he does in a region between the literary and the visual, Badri's primary vehicle is the narrative, whether implied or declared: his paintings talk to us, even if they sometimes appear to do so in code; they invite us to talk about them, about the figures and events they hold. His characters are often trapped in dilemma; they are called upon to make a choice, whether between power and freedom, pleasure and knowledge, or mortality and eternity.'
