Catalogue Note
The subject matter of this work is typical of the landscapes Souza painted during the 1960s with the distinctive haphazard juxtaposition of buildings within a landscape, however the medium and treatment of the subject is unusual and belongs to a rare group of gouaches that Souza produced only during 1965. This group is characterized by a meticulous use of line and clarity of colour that contrasts greatly with his expressionist oils of the same period and is testament to the artist's talent and versatility.
