Mr van Kinderen, father of the present owner and alderman of the city of Schiedam was a great admirer of Karel Appel. In 1958 the Stedelijk Museum of Schiedam had the opportunity to acquire 26 works by the artist and it was in this time that Mr van Kinderen had direct contact with the artist and acquired this unique work for his own collection.
