Condition

STRUCTURE There is a large tear to the sheet in the upper right corner. PAINT SURFACE The paint surface is generally sound but there there are some areas of fading and the restoration to the aforementioned tear has discoloured somewhat. FRAME Under glass and held in a plaster gilt frame in fair condition; unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

According to family tradition Hardy himself tore the sheet when removing the work from the easel.  Rather than discard it, his friend Charles Brindley Esq., persuaded the artist to let him keep it despite the damage.
