Centring on a pear-shaped fancy light brown diamond weighing 32.27 carats, suspended from a chain of fifty-seven graduated old mine-cut diamonds together weighing approximately 39.00 carats, mounted in silver-top gold, length approximately 410mm, pendant detachable.

Provenance

Also accompanied by Gübelin appendix stating that the pear-shaped diamond "displays an antique shape and cutting style which was encountered in the 17th and 18th century, but which are rarely found in the trade nowadays. A perfect symmetry was not, during this period of time, a very important issue. Minor irregularities in both size and shape of the different facets, resulting in some leakage of light, are therefore rather expected characteristics of these old cuts. Diamonds such as this 32.27 ct modified pear-shape, are endowed with a distinct personality and an immense charm which are rarely found today in the modern brilliant cutting styles."

Condition

Colour and Clarity: According to Gübelin report, the pear-shaped diamond is natural, of Fancy Light Brown colour, VS2 clarity. There is also an appendix stating that shape and cutting style of this diamond are consistent with diamonds of 17th and 18th century. Another note states that this brown diamond is of type IIa. Other old mine-cut diamonds are ranging from H to J colours, SI clarity. Pendant is detachable. Condition: Minor abrasions to the mount, consistent with age and use, otherwise in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Type IIa diamonds are the most chemically pure type of diamond and often have exceptional optical transparency.
