Condition

For a large 19th century painting this work is in very good condition. The canvas is unlined. The tacking edges have been reinforced and the reverse of the canvas has been treated with Beva-371 to stabilize the surface. The paint layer has been cleaned, varnished and retouched. There are some restorations which have been applied to a thin scratch on the upper left edge and to a couple of losses in the center of the sky. In the water in the lower left three restorations have been applied, one of them to a circular paint loss. In the remainder of the picture, apart from some losses along the bottom edge, there are no real restorations and we recommend that the picture be hung as is.
