Condition

The canvas appears to be relined. There is craquelure throughout the work especially in the upper right corner where there is lifting along with three small losses. There is also a 2 1/2 in. oval area where the paint is beginning to lift along the right edge (2 in. from the right and 12 in. from the top). There is a 1/2 in. paint loss along the lower left edge, another along the left side of the bottom edge and rubbing at the bottom of the right edge consistent with frame abrasions. Under ultraviolet light there appears to be an opaque varnish and there appear to be large areas of inpainting in the background, also in his shirt especially in the collar and scattered spots in his face. The letters at the top have been partially retouched as well. The canvas is buckled.
