The canvas is unlined and well stretched. Under ultraviolet light there appears to be an opaque varnish on the work. There is inpainting throughout the work especially in the upper background, in the face and in the sitter's right hand. There is scattered craquelure throughout the work but the surface appears to be in stable condition.
