Description

the flattened oval pendant carved and pierced with a qilong dragon, its sinuous body with outstretched limbs coiling around the central aperture, incised with further scrolling motifs, the calcified stone of a warm beige tone with burnet inclusions

Condition

There is an old chip to the top LHS which has been restuck, approx 3 by 0.5cm, and another to the tip of the dragon's right claw. There are minute nibbles to the edges of the carving. Otherwise the pendant is in good condition overall. The colour is slightly richer than illustrated.

Catalogue Note

Skilfully carved with openwork to portray a sinuous dragon in silhouette, the present piece is finished to a smooth surface to display fine incised detail. Compare a similar example in the Tianjin City Art Museum, illustrated in Tianjin shi yishu bowuguan cang yu, Tianjin, 1993, pl. 136; and another published in Alfred Salmony, Archaic Chinese Jades from the Edward and Louise R. Sonnenschein Collection, Chicago, 1952, pl. LXXXIV, fig. 10. Compare also an archaistic pendant inspired by a Warring States prototype sold at Christie's New York, 21st September 2001, lot 518.
