Catalogue Note
The fine combination of raised ridges and incised lines of the c-scroll motif on the present piece creates a tactility and luxurious quality. This slide belongs to one of the most widely used types, and examples have been recovered in tombs from China and sites in Korea where China had established official posts. A closely related example in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1994, pl. 21:11; and another was included in the exhibition Jades from China, The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, 1994, cat. no. 126. See also one formerly in the collection of Ip Yee, sold in these rooms, 19th November 1984, lot 48; another sold in our London rooms, 10th June 1986, lot 67; and a third sold in our New York rooms, 4th December 1984, lot 84.
