Catalogue Note
Finished to a high polish that accentuates the glowing colour of the stone, the present piece represents one of the standard forms of post-Han carving that remained in continuous use until the Qing period. A closely related example was sold in our London rooms, 15th April 1983, lot 129; and another at Christie's London, 8th June 1987, lot 97. Compare also an earlier example, but with broader body and more elaborate carving, included in the exhibition Jades from China, The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, 1994, cat. no. 162.
