Catalogue Note

The superb modelling of the three rams and cloud of smoke coupled with the natural russet colouring of the stone heightens the tactility of this pendant while complementing the unusual double-gourd form. The ram is a symbol of filial piety, kindness and patience, thus three rams (san yang) are an auspicious motif. In carrying meanings that are related to both the sun and to male children, they provide a rebus for san yang kai tai, which is inscribed on the reverse of the present piece, and refers to the ushering-in of renewal and change of fortune and prosperity. A closely related example, but of rectangular form, was sold in these rooms, 6th December 1978 ,lot 1158; and another was sold at Christie's London, 6th December 1993, lot 202.
