Catalogue Note

Yuval Yairi was born in 1961 in Tel Aviv. He completed 4 years of Visual Arts studies at Wizo-Hadassa in Haifa, Israel and continues to work in Jerusalem. He has work in the collections of the Tel Aviv Museum and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
Basement with Typewriter and Bottles is part of the series, Palaces of Memory, exhibited at Andrea Meislin Gallery in 2008. In this body of work Yairi explores the memory of places both imagined and real. Once decided on a place, he photographs hundreds of different details of that space, working frame by frame, only ever slightly moving the camera. Yairi then reconstructs the scene by combining all the single details into a whole scene of the original space. The resulting photograph, as seen in Basement with Typewriter and Bottles is incredibly descriptive and yet slightly distorted.
