Catalogue Note

Although painted by Souza in 1990 this work is stylistically very similar to the townscapes he painted during the 1960s. It possesses the energy of application of the earlier period with the haphazard juxtaposition of buildings. 'The landscapes, architectonic with their 'cubic factors' are ultimately lyrical. There's an unrestrained enthusiasm, a liberty in the application of colour that is swiftly applied with a palette knife, creating smooth pulsating textures.' (Anthony Ludwig, Souza, New Delhi, Dhoomimal Gallery).
