Catalogue Note

The present work is from an intimate collection including several works on paper by Marie Laurencin with whom Daisy Fellowes, the grandmother of the present owner, was a great friend (see lots: 239, 254, 256 & 257). Also representing this collection is a Family Group sculpture by Henry Moore (Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale).

The present work depicts the famous Casino de Nice, a sumptuous palace of the riviera that drew elegant society throughout the 1920s. It is not about social comment but a fun, colourful expression of an era that Raoul Dufy eagerly embraced in his art.
