Catalogue Note

During the years 1895 and 1896 Renoir made a series of intimate sketches and paintings of his young son, Jean, with Gabrielle Renard, the family nursemaid. The various works on this subject are closely interrelated – every nuance of gesture or pose, in turn, informs that of another study, resulting in a small but distinct group. Renoir treated the subject with great tenderness, remarking that 'it's such a lovely subject ... I am working for myself and myself alone' (quoted in Colin B. Bailey (ed.), Renoir's Portraits: Impressions of an Age, New Haven & London, 1997, p. 224)
